You would never guess how close by Reykjavik you have stunning viewpoints over the volcanoes and lava fields, hot springs and beautiful lakes. But you have to know where to look.
We start with a 55 minutes documentary at the Volcano House, Tryggvagata 11, downtown Reykjavik. It is an informative, exciting warm up that helps you imagine what has taken place, once you get up to the volcanoes.
The drive starts at 10.00 and we take you right away to some of the peninsula's top attractions. It is of course always a bit dependent on weather what is most interesting so we take the liberty of improvising a bit with the itinerary. Our groups are always small, so we are flexible.
On the way out of the city we tell you all about the activity of the overdue volcanoes surrounding the city area and how an eruption could affect the people living here.
Only 30 minutes drive from Reykjavik we stop at a cinder cone in the lava/volcanoes east of Reykjavik. If you are light footed you can hike up to there and see how the magma was shooting up from underneath and then forming the lava fields around it.
We then drive the road less travelled through the moon like lava fields to the volcanoes south of Reykjavik, stop at scenic places only visited by our guests and enjoy both the view and the fact that no one is there except us. We continue off the beaten track to the south coast of the peninsula stopping to take pictures or to enjoy what we see on the way.
At the fishing village Grindavik we stop for a brief lunch break (meals not included) before we head on to more scenic places such as Gunnuhver hot spring, the cliffs were the Atlantic waves are breaking, the symbolic bridge between the tectonic plates and the lighthouse Reykjanesviti and the nearby geothermal power plant Reykjanesvirkjun.
It will now be time to start heading back. On our way we make a quick coffee/toilet break at Grindavik but we still have some wonderful places to see. The geothermal area Seltún, the explosion crater Grænavatn and the beautiful lake Kleifarvatn where we try to find some beautiful off the beaten track places to stop.
It is now only 30 minutes drive back to the city and you have spent the entire time enjoying the landscape and the storytelling of our very friendly and knowledgeable, local guide. It is a compact 7 hours volcano-lava-storytelling-experience.
In this half day tour we offer hot chocolate and "kleina" the Icelandic twisted doughnut.
